Abstract & Summary

We are in the very early days of an educational revolution. Traditional pathways are becoming insanely expensive and resulting in mountains of crippling debt for young graduates. The old learning paradigm, based on an industrial society, is quickly becoming obsolete. Technology continues to open up new alternative routes to knowledge and expertise and the possibilities are endless. The world has changed—so rapidly that the establishment cannot keep up with huge overhead costs and billions invested in an inflexible infrastructure.

Millions of students are turning to the internet for free or inexpensive ways to gain knowledge. In the last couple of years alone there has been an explosion of online courses and learning tools made available. But there are fundamental problems left to be solved. Most are struggling to embrace this new, learner-centered paradigm effectively. That is where this project comes in: its mission is to enable and empower independent learners across the globe and of all ages to connect, collaborate and learn better online and in the real world.

For this Output Packet I have conducted in-depth research as well as pulled from my own professional experience in education to identify the core problems of the modern learning experience. Using this specific knowledge I have designed a solution that will function as an ally to all involved in the movement toward this new paradigm. By reading through this OP you will learn how I plan to create an online community of independent learners and a peer-to-peer educational marketplace and learning economy. It will allow learners of all walks of life to become knowledge entrepreneurs, creating feedback loops that maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the learning process.

The project aims to intervene in the system at a point of maximum leverage, helping to change the way we learn, form perspective and identity, and understand our relationship with the world around us. It will contribute to a new perspective on education - not as something that will lead to debt and slavery, but instead to intellectual and financial freedom. The line between student and teacher will become unrecognizably blurred, as well as the line between student and professional. There is no limit to the problem-solving power of this emerging paradigm in education and the ways in which it will transform us and the world we live in.
